I have been browsing around here and found some ways to make laundry soap by grating up a bar of 100% CO soap but was wondering if you could just make 100% CO liquid soap and use that instead or is that not a good idea?

I am very interested in this as well and researched a bit a couple weeks ago.

I found a recipe I like using:
washing soda
borax
dr bronners castile soap (i'm guessing you can substitute any other castile soap)

I found this on my merry mess life

Then in a comment I saw someone posted a link to their own site, where she stated she researched and that no one commercial detergent used both soda and borax. And that was where I stopped my research.

I bought soda in the grocery store (they don't have borax). I found borax in Target (didn't buy it yet) but they don't have soda.

Anyway I thought it was pretty simple and cheap to make, but I admit I haven't tried it yet. I was intrigued by the idea of only using 2 out of 3 ingredients.

I have noticed that Walmart is now carrying both soda and borax. I get mine at an old school grocery in my town. I have not used store bought detergent in over 6 months.

I won't shop at Walmart.

What recipe have you been using? We can produce some pretty greasy clothes and I worry that maybe I should keep commercial stuff on hand for them.

Linda, I remember seeing yours. You grate soap too dont you. I liked the idea of starting with the liquid castile. Have you tried that or only the bar?

I dont shop walmart unless I absolutely have to. That place is a nightmare.

I shredded one bar of fels naptha and melt it in some water. 1 cup of wash soda and .5 cup of borax in about 2.5 gallons of HOT water. Mix until all the poweder and lumps are out of there. Finish filling with hot water and let it sit over night. You can then dilute it one more time for a total of 10 gallons of soap. I share with my mom and I just finished making my 3rd batch in 6 months. I do add some fragrance to it, I dont like the bland smell of it otherwise.

My sister made this same soap Dawn, but her husband is an electrician and it isn't quite good enough to get out the ground in dirt from crawling under cottages or in icky attics. :( She likes it for her clothes, and it gets the kids' clothes clean too!

hmm..well I guess this would be a good time to admit that I dont dilute mine into the 10 gallons, I stop at the 5 gallon mark and use it concentrated. My husband works in concrete and is covered in concrete dust during the week and farm grime on the weekends. Seems to work real well on his clothes. He is allergic to a lot of the fabric softeners in the commercial detergents, so he has really enjoyed the reprieve from itchy backs and rashes.

Thanks! I didn't know that. Why is it labeled as castile? :?

I had seen a thread here on coconut oil but I think they were still bars that were being grated. I'd love to know if you try this and how it works out!
