Summer's coming up and the sun will be out to get me! :C I burn easily and get sun rashes even after only a few minutes. I use SPF100 to protect me, but I wanted to make a lotion or cream of some sort for when the sunscreen fails me. I haven't made lotions before, but I've read a lot about how to make them (sounds like a lot of work). I'm the kind of person that hates lotion (that greasy feeling is gross), so tips/recipes on how to make something light and fluffy would be great.

What kind of ingredients could I use to reduce swelling, itching, and pain and how could I incorporate them into a lotion/cream?

The best thing for a sunburn is not lotion, which can trap the heat from sunburn in the skin. I would use cool to cold aloe vera or just plain cold water and keep reapplying it. To reduce itching try Benedryl or take a lukewarm to tepid bath with colloidial oatmeal.

I also will support the aloe vera, although I use it more for cooking burns, as I am very careful outside. I have 3 aloe plants and just snip off a stem. open it up and rub on. Works like a charm. But for a fresh sunburn you want to stop the burning process first.... cold compressess!! This will also help to have the skin clean before you apply the aloe. And are you able to stay indoors between 10am and 2pm when the sun is the hottest? It is always better to prevent a sunburn than to treat it.

Actually, this may sound weird to a lot of peeps, but I keep a bottle of MOM (milk of magnesia) in the fridge. Then use a cotton ball to apply. Works wonders! I've used this method for years...

I use milk of magnesia on my sunburns because I'm allergic to aloe. It works great :)

I use dandelions for burns... sounds weird I know. But I make a strong tea with fresh dandelion flowers and let sit until cool. I place the heads right on the burn and the tea water works great too. Really minimizes the pain and the cool water and flowers bring down the heat.

I'm not sure about sunburn but I use emu oil for fire burn all the time. It's expensive but it works like magic and afterward no skin peeling.
