Teach Soap

Got my first wooden mold from the soap making resource today and inside by grab bag was some silk. I cant use it soap since my husband is vegan but was wondering if I could use it in lotion or something for myself. I would really like to try it

I don't think it would dissolve in lotion water. You need the really high heat that lye water generates to dissolve it for soap making.

You could just make yourself a special batch of soap.

Just throwing this out there - I haven't yet attempted making lotion from scratch. But could she heat up just the water by itself to simmering to dissolve the silk, then let it cool down to under the hold temp, then add whatever else she needs for the heat & hold water phase?

I'm thinking that it needs the lye to break down the silk fibers, that just putting it in hot water won't do it. But, I could be wrong!

According to my research, silk can be hydrolysed either with acids or bases.

Presumably spider silk would also work?
