Teach Soap

Hi all! I would like to get into lotion making and salt scrubs to add to my line of soaps. Anyways my question about the lotion containers that i will be ordering from an online company is...do i need to steralize or sanitize them? Thank you!

Do not do anything to the containers! You don't want to contaminate them. They should come clean from the vendor.

I'll have to disagree, sorry. Containers probably come from a warehouse and will be contaminated. I go and pick mine up so I am quite sure they come from a warehouse that's constantly in use. Unwashed, they will grow A. Niger (the black mould) if I leave a culture medium inside for a couple of days. I soak them for 30 minutes in a bath of deionised water and 5% bleach (bottles and caps). Double wall jars are a nuisance because they usually have a small hole in the outer that can allow water to get into the space between walls. For those, I wipe the inside and screw thread area with a baby wipe.

Be aware that there are definately differing opinions about whether or not to sterilize lotion containers.
Soapbuddy has stated her OPINION about this ,BUT in ANNE MARIES book on lotion making she recommeneds sanitizing in a bleach water solution ALL equipment including bottles. this has been a hot topic on this forum in the past. My opinion is I would not take a newly purchased baby bottle out of the package and put it in my grandsons mouth with out doing all I could to sanitize/ stearilize that bottle,I have the same philosophy about my customers.

I sanitize my bottles/jars as well.

I know the voices in my head aren't real, but they sure have some great ideas!

I always sanitize my equipment and containers just before using. Best practice IMO.
