I made bathbombs the other night and used Citric Acid, Baking Soda, alittle glycerin and almond oil. They turned out perfect and seem to be alittle harder than the ones I made in the past with cornstarch.

Would cornstarch make a softer bathbomb? What is the reason for using cornstartch

I don't make bathbombs because I have no market for them, but I would not use any insoluble ingredients in them such as corn starch, because it will leave residue behind.

I have to agree with barquentine, especially after seeing this.

Seems like a fun kids project, though! :)

I believe I will no longer make them with cornstarch.

Many of us use cornstarch in bubble bar and bathbomb recipes with no problems. to each his own. :D

What is the cornstarch supposed to do? Does it make the water soft?

The cornstarch suppose to help for the scent to hold. I haven't noticed any difference and no longer use corn starch. Just because a recipe says to add it....I prefer to experiment and see for myself.

I find myself wondering if polysorbate 20 in equal proportion as the FO would help moisten the bath bomb and help it stick together, while at the same time not causing a reaction between the citric and bicarb? Should be simple enough to do an experiment.

After MUCH experimenting with and without cornstarch I have found that it adds a silkier feel to the water, any powdered ingredient will anchor your scent, mixing your scent with a little tapioca starch works as well and also contributes a softness to the water. And as I make a treamendous amount of BB's I have found that including cornstarh at half the ratio of my other ingredients helps me to get that many more BB's. Filler is not a dirty word! :D

I like the "silky" feeling the cornstarch adds to the water.

Now, if I can just get these MONDO bath bombs to harden I'll be golden! My small ones work just fine.

I got the molds from Bramble Berry, and they make bombs that are about 7.5 ounces. I'm still trying to get the formula right. Those turned out ok, but one crumbled and I had to repack it.
