I was considering trying a recipe for a sugar scrub cube (from Soap Queen) and it uses BTMS-50. I'm unfamiliar with this ingredient (just did a quick, cursory reading online about it), but it a sulfate, correct? I know some people are anti-sulfates, but I personally haven't researched it extensively enough to know why. When I research "why are sulfates bad/harmful" I keep getting results for SLS, but not just sulfates.
So....can someone point me in the right direction with information as to why some people think sulfates (not just SLS) are bad/harmful?

(Incidentally, on the page where I found the recipe she also lists an all-natural version of the sugar scrub cube and I was thrilled to see that I already have all the needed ingredients on hand---woo hoo! Might have to try my hand at that one (when hubby's not looking......he'll roll his eyes at yet another of my new experiments when I have lots of unfinished projects already swimming about!) )

Not all sulfates are harmful or "bad", unless maybe if you're allergic to sulfates. Some can be irritants, especially to those with eczema, but not all of them are.

I truly believe that the reason there's so much negativity towards sulfates is because of ethanolamine lauryl sulfate. It was a surfactant found in shampoos and such, in the 70's. It was found to contain nitrosamine contaniments. Ethanolamine lauryl sulfates were removed from shampoos. But unfortunately that's when they myths began. Now with the internet, anyone can write whatever they want about it and it spreads. Then people use those articles to base their opinions on and back up their own articles and it continues to spread. It's like a disease.

Here's some info on Sulfates, mostly on SLS because that's what everyone's afraid of the most:

http://personalcaretruth.com/page/2/?s=sulfate

I recently had someone freak out about my bath salts and tell me that they would cause cancer because they contained, wait for it......Magnesium Sulfate.

To me, sulfates are a lot like alcohols. They get a bad rap because of the word and that's it. I make lotion that contains cetearyl alcohol. People see the word alcohol, think rubbing alcohol, which they remember as drying, which leads them to think that the lotion is drying to their skin. Yet, cetearyl alcohol is a fatty alcohol, so it does the opposite of what they think it should do.

Sulphates really irritate the eczema on my scalp, so I stay away from them in shampoos. However! I use BTMS based lotion on my legs and it doesn't bother the eczema there one bit. In fact my CP soap with my hand made lotion has me almost eczema free, and my keratosis pilaris is almost gone too! My skin went from dry and itchy to soft and moisturized. Sulphates aren't all bad! Though I used to think they were and avoided them like the plague. Darn this forum and all the information making me change my mind on so many things! *shakes fist*

sodium laurel sulfate, or SLS as it's known, is very irritating. It creates a lot of lather and it is incredibly cheap which is why 98% of shampoos found in supermarkets contain it.
BTMS is nothing like it. BTMS is a cationic (opposite of anionic, which SLS is). BTMS is used in creams and conditioners. Should be no problem at all. Don't try to use it in a shampoo though, it would split!
