If I buy grapeseed oil in a grocery store, is it the same as if i get it from someplace like Brambleberry? And what should I look for on the label? I got some and it was pretty cheap so i was wondering. It doesnt say anything about cold pressed or anything else. They had some coconut oil there that said expeller pressed .. what does that mean? Thanks

I would say that BrambleBerry goes through their grapeseed a lot faster then one you can get locally. Who knows how long that bottle sat on the shelf in a store.

We had been using grapeseed oil in almost all of our products b/c I love the way it feels, so luxurious. I think it makes our sugar scrubs heavenly. But now we after we read around we see how the short shelf life can ruin products.
How well does adding vitamin E actually help keep it from going rancid (like at 1%). Like has anyone done any comparisons?

I used to use grapeseed oil in lotions. Even with Vit E added, the lotion started to smell at less then 6 months sitting on a store shelf. The ones without grapeseed were fine.

I have used grapeseed in soap for over a year now and so far no DOS or change in my bars. I do know that grapeseed is starting to top olive oil as the recommended oil to use for cooking in this area of the country. Maybe our grocery stores are replacing their supply quicker?

The stuff on grocery shelves would be sealed, wouldn't it? Wouldn't that limit oxidization?

Of course, the big minus is price--even buying by the gallon saves a lot.

The oil from grocery is very probably extracted with solvent. You can get no reasonable answer from the supplier because they don't know themselves how the oil was extracted (solvent? hot or cold extraction). I bet they extract with hexane and extract hot. On the other hand, the oil from supermarket has additives such as BHT to keep it from rancidity.
The oil from BB or any other respectable supplier for cosmetics should be expresses or at least cold extracted. Adding vitamin E or rosemary extract can prolong the shelf life (depending on the formulation, storage, etc. etc.) up to 6 months.
