hi everyone,

I currently have a soy candle company and am trying to add lotion and soaps to my collection. Couple of CP soap under my belt, loved it and addicted already. ALso a couple of batches of whipped shea butter, problem is they don't seem to stay in a really whipped state...kind of firm up a little after a day or so. They still work really well but is it normal for them to firm up and not stay like the whipped cream consistency that I have when just finished!

Thanks

Which butters and oils are you using, or are you whipping up straight shea? Is it refined or unrefined?

It is unrefined. Here is the recipe for my first attempt. Fot both recipes I melted the shea til just melted and added the oils after.
4oz shea
2 oz grapeseed oil
.5oz apricot oil
.18 EO

Then I tried another batch that I wanted for my babies little bum!
2oz shea
.5 oz castor
.5 oz apricot
and some lavender EO
This one seemed a little more whipped after a day but still more firm then when I made it :)

I've had greater success in keeping shea in a "whipped" state by doing it in larger batches. I never go under 1 lb.

Also, I know people are going to probably disagree with me on this, but if it's for your baby's butt and to be used on possibly irritated skin from diaper rashes, I'd skip the eo.

Thanks Genny, but I really like lavender oil...been using it as my go to oil for much longer than I have been making candles or soaps :) Its in small quantities and seems to work really well for her little tush!

What would be the difference in making a bigger batch to keep the whipped feel and look? My thought was to make it as a custom order so it stayed fresh(once I can sell a perfected recipe that is). Do your batches stay fresh for customers for a while?

If yours is unrefined, why not whip it as is? I used to use lavender on my daughter when she was little. She's now allergic to lavender. :( So just a heads up.

I have read that whipping shea without melting it causes the grainy affect.

Thanks for the lavender bit, shall have to be careful then...my 9yr old also really likes to use it :)

Guess I will just have to keep trying til I come up with a recipe that works. My tush butter has castor oil in it which I think made a difference. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't wasting my time trying to get it to stay all nice and whipped!

Do you guys add a preservative even though there isn't any water in it? I am trying to stay away from having to purchase it but what would you suggest to be an all round multi purpose one?

I did a whipped butter that was 6 oz shea, 6 oz coconut and 3 oz almond. I melted the oils together and then put them in an ice bath to whip them. It has stayed really firm and nicely whipped. I love it!

Oh so yours firmed up after whipping? I just tried a different recipe that was the recipe that A-M used on the soap queen. I used some different oils to make it my own and cut the recipe in half. I really like how it feels on my skin and it soaks in really nice...but it too firmed up a little after it set for an hour! Maybe that is just the texture I will be dealing with, which I dont mind as long as my future customers won't mind it :)

Well, it firmed up as I was whipping. If I went too much further it would have become cement! Maybe you just arent whipping it enough. Did you whip it until it looked like egg whites for a souffle? or until it holds a nice stiff peak like sour cream?
