Hi guys :)

I'm sure I read on these forums about using sea salt as a bad idea as it can still be quite 'moist'. But of course now I can't find that info hehe.

I bought out a bulk lot of soaping stuff from someone who is not doing it anymore, and with it came about 4 kgs of sea salt. Since I make bath salts, I can technically use it, but the "moist" factor keeps banging around the back of my head...

Would using the sea salt in the bath salts cause the mixture to become clumpy / moist?

The sea salt could make the soap weep due to its natural moisture.

Sea salt could make bath salts clumpy or turn it into one rock hard lump. Don't ask me how I know.

You don't need a bath. Mix the salt with a nice oil like almond or coconut and make a scrub out of it to use in the shower. Sea salt will weep in MP soap as well. Regular table salt works better then sugar, since MP would make the sugar melt.

I had been using "Mediteranean sea salt" from the grocery store in my fizzy bath salts with epsom and dendritic salt and the baking soda/citric acid mix and ran out so I purchased "dead sea salt" online. Looked and felt the same, but when I used that instead of my grocery store sea salt it ruined by fizzy salt. Went to bed with nice fluffy dry salt, woke up the next morning with a fizzing volcano soupy lava overflowing mess all over my counter/floor.
The little bit of moisture in the salt reacted with the citric acid/baking soda and because that reaction actually produces more water, it just kept going until it was ruined.
So, lessons learned:
1. Not all salts are equal (even if they have same/similar names)
2. You don't know until you try =) Experiment, experiment experiment.

I do believe there is a difference in sea salts and dead sea salts. I have used sea salt (1tsp PPO) in my lye water to harden up my
bars some and never had a problem with sweating. This is sea salt from the grocery store and is a very fine grain. I also used it in my bath salts and they are fine (currently using one that is a year old). I have also seen some photos of soap with the larger grain sea salts sprinkled on top of the soaps like some sprinkle on glitter. Now I do live in the north and our temps are lower but we do get some humid days.
