I enjoy making bath bombs and bubble bars, and all that fun stuff...Well....ever since looking into health canada and inci names. I decided to stop using WILTON colorants and go with a cosmetic grade colorant. I purchased from two different suppliers mentioning that it will work very well and color the bath water, so I tried them and I am not pleased at all. Half a bottle later and the water is still clear. :(

Does anyone know a good colorant that will change the bath water? If possible from a company here in Canada.

Or is anyone using "wilton" icing colors, and how do you send the INCI name?

I am going outta my mind and need advice...please help! :)

Which cosmetic grade colorants did you buy to sub for the wilton colors?

F D&C Red #33, Green #3, etc....

they color slightly but not as vivid as the wilton colorants. and with wilton u only need a little bit. this one after 6-10 drop for a small batch its a pale color. atleast its cosmetic grade. the other one isnt cosmetic grade and i dont think would be approved for health canada. i do notice with wilton colorants that after a few months the colors do fade, and im sure with time fd&c will fade as well.

I use FD&C colorants in some of my soaps, but I prefer the powder, which is VERY concentrated. Like the tip of the knife for the whole batch. Are yours pre-diluted?

I use the colorants fd&c....im really not sure if they are pre-diluted. my supplier is www.canwax.com i use those for soaps and lotions and i love them. i use them in my bath bombs too now. I have tried a pre-mixed version from voyageursoapandcandle and did NOT like them at all. they have no color watsoever to it.

I have the Canwax ones too, I've only used them for MP so far though. I want Canwax to be back up so I can order more stuff for making bath bombs!

I just ordered some D&C powder colorants (water-based) for my bath bombs. I have tried the d&c red #33 and it colored my bath bomb a purplish hue. I was looking for a more pinkish tone. Does anyone have any recommendation to how i can play with the hue of the colorants. Should I mix it with some water beforehand and then use it drop by drop? Do I need a preservative if i mix it with some water? Can I mix it with another liquid or add it to the oil phase before adding it to the rest of the mixture?

What I have done was taken a little bit of the powder colorant and added it to my dry phase, then spritzed with witch hazel. But the color wasnt the shade I was hoping it to be.

Any ideas!!! :)

FD&C Red #40 will give you a pinkish color. You can predilute it in some glycerin. If you use water to pre-dilute, then you will need a preservative.

To pre-dilute the D&C colorants what percentage would you recommend. I use 1 tsp per 1/3 cup glycerin for ultramarines. Do you recommend the same amount?
