Hiya

I was looking at getting a hand-held beater for mixing butters etc (not sure my stick blender would cope with that!)

Here in NZ to get something with Stainless beaters is over $200!!! Hand-held!

Ordinary old chrome beaters around $60+

Just wondering if anyone knows if certain ingredients react with chrome?

Can you get the 'white' ones? I got a White Stick Blender from Kmart for $49.00 and the bottom part even detaches and is dishwasher safe!

Stainless steel is really the best as it won't react to fragrance or essential oils. I don't think you would want chrome as it could react. Can you find a second hand store that might have one?

Chrome plate will not react with anything you'll use. Safe enough.

Hmm..I also was always told sodium hydroxide will react with chrome.

NaOH will strip black chrome, but bright chrome is more resistant. However over time it will probably make a mess of it. Since chromium products are usually toxic I'd avoid using chromed beaters.
Actually, chrome plate is not usually 100% consistent and if you get the NaOH in contact with the base metal - steel - well...
I'll see if I can do an experiment, I have some chrome items here so I'll put them in boiling caustic soda and see if anything happens.

Zinc + Sodium hydroxide will form Sodium Zincate (Na2ZnO2).
Zinc and Aluminium are the only metals which react with bases to form metal zincates and alumnates respectively.

HOWEVER, I see that I've lost track. This question was about using chrome beaters with CREAMS - not soapmaking! I can tell you that I used to use a mixer with chromed beaters to make skin creams, we had them lab tested, no metal contamination was found. The pH in creams should never get anywhere near the level that could cause trouble.
