I don't want to sound bossy but in my previous life I was a Senior Vet Nurse so here's my two cents...
Due to a cat's nature they lick everything off them and can be poisoned easily. We would never recommend even a baby's shampoo for this reason (and possible skin irritations). When I had to wash a cat (not too many occasions thankfully) we could only use warm water (boring I know) and a nice dry off and a TEENY spritz of the commerical pet spray we had at the clinic. This was mainly for the human owners

Maybe a nice cat perfume spray would be a safer option?

What does the groomer currently use? Perhaps there are safe products nowadays.

Sorry for raising the dead (a really old post) but I am so curious about this. I have several cats and would love to have an all-natural soap for them. It seems silly to just get them wet to rinse them off and not clean them.

How can a chemically-laden pet shampoo be ok for them but not a simple, natural soap (without EO or FO)?
(I don't mean to sound crabby, I'm just really curious!)

Who says the chemically-laden pet shampoos are ok for them? Just the manufacturer of said shampoo. That doesn't mean it is true. Cats generally are very good at cleaning themselves and really don't need help from us humans. Although I am sure that there are instances where one might not be able to do so (really dirty, sick or overweight cats). I have only tried to bathe a cat once in my life. I now have scars on my stomach that remind me that was not a good idea. I would consult my cat's (or dog's) vet to be sure that what I am using is good for the kitty. And if the cat has stopped grooming suddenly then they should be seen by the vet anyway as there might be something wrong. Just my opinion.

I did not take on this project for safety reasons. I know that when my cat got sick, he stopped grooming. That's how I knew he had gotten sick. I took him to the vet and asked what I should do. He said nothing. Some antibiotics and a couple days later and he was back to his old self and perfectly clean. I wouldn't worry about a shampoo for cats.

Darn! I want to do something nice for my kitties, but I guess I'll just leave them be...

Thanks guys.

P.s. - After I posted here yesterday, I went and read the label for the pet shampoo we have. Whew! What a list of gross ingredents!

I make a dog shampoo bar that sells fairly well but I include the following warning on each bar. "Not for use on cats or other animals." I put this warning on each bar because cats do have different skin and I will not attempt to make one for them.

I ended up making my dog shampoo bar unscented. But put in goats milk and honey for good skin conditioning.
I saw some at an Esty sight the other day that contained oatmeal. I would think that that would be hard to rinse out of a dogs fur.

Would one of you guys mind giving me a recipe for a dog shampoo or soap? I'd really appreciate it. Thanks! Robin
