I made my first batch of Bath Fizzys. After playing a bit I was able to get the texture that sturck together. My 6 year old grandson helped me and we just got it wet enough to feel like moon sand. He loved making them. The next day they were hard and beautiful. They fizzed nicely but had an odd smell. My husband says it is probably the citric acid. I have never read where anybody said that they have had this problem. I used a recipe from one of my book for a basic bath fizzy. CItric Acid, Baking Soda and Corn Starch plus a little FO and colorant. Any Idas? Also, if I perfect these, I would like to sell them at craft shows. Would a preservative be needed? Also, Iwould love to hear ideas on packaging these little balls of wonder and also on pricing. Thanks!

I forgot to mention that after a week the smell was not as strong. I am thinking that it may go away completely after sitting a while but we used them so quickly I'll have tomake more to see, :)

I'm new to all this soap making stuff, but I also tried by first batch of bath fizzies and I didn't have that problem, the only difference in mine is that I did not use corn starch and I wet mine with witch hazel. I used a lavander FO and they smelled heavenly. Try that and see if it makes a difference.

I also made my first batch using only the baking soda and citric acid (no cornstarch) and they turned out fine and no bad smell. That makes me wonder if the cornstarch is the culprit to the bad smell?

What are you spraying it with to get it wet like sand?

The smell could be from your fo reacting with the other ingredients.
I've done bath bombs with cornstarch for customer's requests and I've never had it smell any different than any other time.

Also, with most bath bomb recipes, a preservative would not be needed.

As for pricing, you can figure out the price of each bath bomb and do the regular x 2 for wholesale and x 4 for retail thing. Or you can check out places like Etsy to compare yours

Did you spritz with water as you were packing into molds? If so, was it tap water, or purified or distilled? If tap...perhaps that's where the smell was coming from? I don't use water for my bombs - witch hazel instead.

Which colorant did you use? I remember when I used either oxides or ultramarines and ended up with a rotten egg smell.

I made another batch & did not use cornstarch. They came out fine! Apparantly the cornstarch was the problem! I used ultramarine pigments the first time which tinted my tub so I didn;t use any colorant the second time and plan to order BB La Bomb colors when I can afford to. Has anybody used them before? I was wondering how far that much colorant would go. Thanks everybody for your comments!
