Teach Soap

Hi All,
I am working on some salt scrubs tonight and through searching the forum see that a preservative system is recommended. I have Optiphen Plus, would that be a good preservative to use? I am not sure because I searched the net and cannot determine if the pH of the scrub would be too high for the preservative to be effective. I am using dead sea salt and epsom salts. Optiphen plus is most effective at a pH of 6 or below (thank you SB for the very informative post on various preservative systems). I am under the impression that salts are a much higher pH but maybe I am wrong.....

Salt by itself has no pH since it doesn't contain hydrogen. As soon as you add water though, the salt solution would be around pH from 7-8. The PH scale is made up of acids which are positives. Alkalines have a negative PH. Water is a 7 on the scale and is neutral. It is made up of an acid and alkaline so the two cancel each other out. Optiphen Plus has been proven effective at pH levels above 6.0. So that's what I would use.

AHA! It was a case of me over thinking the issue. Thank you for explaining the salt issue, it makes a lot more sense now.
