Hello, I am thinking of making some sample candy drop and roses lotion bars for Valentines Day and was wondering if any of you have ever tried coloring in your lotion bars? I was thinking red food color for roses and maybe cocoa or melted chocolate in the candy drops, what do you think??? Thanks.

I prefer to use a dark chocolate fragrance oil and some shimmery brown mica, but cocoa powder can work too! I use ground cacao beans as an exfoliant in some things too!

I've used cocoa powder in a sugar scrub soap and I think it's great. The smell and color are fantastic and (of course) perfectly realistic. Affordable, too.

Lotion bars have no water. Most food coloring is water based, so it will not mix very well. Be aware that cocoa powder can stain.

Thanks Magia and Thepomseed I will give it a try and thanks Soapbuddy for the heads up on what can go wrong. I think I will 86 the red food color and think of something else, but I may go ahead and give the cocoa powder a go and see how it turns out.

If you use cocoa butter in your lotion bar (and buy the full fragrance stuff), then it will smell chocolatey anyway.

If you use a drop of vanilla fragrance or essential oil, most of them naturally discolour to tan/brown, so that might make your bar look a bit more chocolatey, without it coming off on your skin so much, as it would be quite diluted in the bar (plus its usually non-sensitising).

Micas or shimmer powders can also mean that people get left with nice shimmery skin!

Thank you all. I did try all three ways, they came nice, I do not get the whole why anyone would want to smell like chocolate anyway, (I love eating it, but not smelling like it) but with the cocoa butters natural scent and just a little cocoa it worked nicely like you suggested and they were happy which is all that matters

Glad to see that it worked out for you. I have chocolate soap, but it's a slow seller.
