I use BB micas and they work great! I use the witch hazel sparingly..I think if you can smell the witch hazel through the fragrance it is possible you have used too much of it.

Also, are you waiting at least 5 minutes before removing them from the mold? Depending on how intricate the mold is, you might want to wait a bit longer.

Hello all,

I just made my first bath bombs and have been following this thread. I started out using a recipe that left my bath bombs morphing into marsh mellow pancakes! I switched to the recipe posted in this thread and it helped a lot! :)

The problem is that now the bath bombs seem to crumble - maybe too little of something? I used coconut oil - not fractionated. I also noticed that they are not rock hard like most bath bombs - not soft but squeezing one would leave an imprint. After making them, I set them on a drying rack in a cool room with a dehumidifier and a fan. A friend suggested I bake them... What am I missing?

Try taking out the coconut oil.

Start off with using the basic bath bomb recipe:

http://teachsoap.com/bombs.html

1 part citric acid
2 parts baking soda
spray bottle of witch hazel (use sparingly)
colorant
fragrance oil

Too much oil in the recipe and it won't harden, or will crumble, so start with the basics first, then you can play around, but work in small batches and don't add too much of a new ingredient. Also, test out the bath bomb. If adding the coconut oil doesn't make any noticeable improvement to your bath, then don't use it. Hope it helps. Good luck with the bath bombs!

This is the thing, I took out the use of the jojoba oil, but I notice that I still have to spray more than 2 or 3 sprays of witch hazel!!! I make 2 bb's at a time, so I don't know what I am doing wrong. Besides that; I don't know what type of oil or butter I can add to the BB in order to enhance the silkening effect. Any suggestions?

Thank you frimfram...I'm going to try it (tonight) without the coconut oil and see what happens. At least I have eliminated the "pancake" effect! :)

I use jojoba and macadamia nut glycerides in mine and they're like rocks, too. I have sprayed too much and they sort they crumble, but it's a wetter crumble obviously. If you spray too little, it's a more rigid crumble. Kind of like dry mud...

I agree with the advice to just use a very basic recipe and try that. The witch hazel is such a 'thouch' thing, it's hard to explain exactly what it's like when it's right. Get that down and then experiment with adding some oils.

I use coconut oil or cocoa butter in mine, but it is solid stuff, and I chop it up small. If you had liquid coconut oil, I think that might cause issues.

When I have used liquid colours, they didn't colour the whole mixture properly, but I decided it looked pretty. I mixed it up with clean hands, sifting it like you would a crumble mix.

If you want something you can get in the grocery store, you could use paprika for orange/red and saffron or possibly tumeric for yellow- you can market that as all natural colourants. You could also probably use food colouring. Where I live, some of the shops have yellow, orange and red powder colours, for use in curries.

I found this list of natural colourants on a website... maybe it is of some use to you.

Light/Dark Brown: black walnut hull, ground cloves, all spice, nutmeg
Yellow: safflower powder, tumeric, annato seeds, calendular petals
Green: burdock leaf, comfrey leaf, dandylion leaf, green clay
Red: madder root, sandalwood powder, red clay
Salmon/orange: cayenne pepper, paprika
Purple: alkanet root
