Ok, I made Ann Marie's basic lotion from her tutorial and followed the directions exactly, except I subsituted jojoba oil for the avacado oil. I used Cherry Almond FO from BB. Now, I used the lotion and experienced nothing, just nice creamy, thick lotion..but when my hubby got out of the shower and after shaving, put some on his face and it burned like crazy. But also on his forehead where he doesn't shave. He has no burning on his hands or arms with it. What could the problem be. I mixed it very, very well. Any ideas what happened.

Full recipe
18 oz. distilled water
1.2 oz. shea butter
1.7 oz. sweet almond oil
1 oz. jojoba oil
1.2 oz. e-way
1 oz. stearic acid
.2 oz. germaben II
.1 oz fragrance

Face skin is more sensitive than body skin. Does he have any allergies that you're aware of?
I know most of my customers (about 99.99%) do not use any products on their face that contain FO, for the sensitivity reason.

Hope the burn stops soon. Have him wash his face again and clearly don't use that particular lotion on his face in the future.

Hopefully someone else may have a more conclusive answer for you.

It could be the fragrance or the preservative. Minimal amount of Germaben II that's recommended would have been 0.07 oz. at 0.3% for the total of this recipe.

Denversoap, we all have sensitive skin, I tried it on 4 of us. My hubby's face is still red toned, like he worked out...he cannot touch his face with the lotion on his fingers...no burn other then his face...and he used it everywhere else, and i mean everywhere...then me, tried it first, only sensation like a menthol rub on my hands, no where else, I used it everywhere and right after it was made..I hate menthol rubs, makes my hand cold. I let my dear friend test...and insisted she put it on her leg, and hand..she's way more sensitive, so no face..she also experienced a sensation on her legs and hands, and unfortunatly won't try it much again even though I want her to test it. I don't blame her. Then her fiance, he had sensaitons on his hands, and I had to fuss about him trying it. Of course I said to wash it off with soap if it was uncomfortable and not use it again. They will look for any color changes in the bottles for me. I LOVE MY TESTERS and I would never sell under these condition, but for my first, It wasn't too bad.

Soapbuddy, it must be too much preservative and too much fragrance..The smell of the cherry almond does have a menthol note to it...the lotion it'self is great. I'll reduce it to see what happens. I don't like making small batches of anything, but I'll try. I'll try making it unsented and with no preservative, for me of course, to see if that helps with the tingling menthol thing.

On another note, can you tell me what Stearic Acid is, I know it is the product in Palm Oil, that settles if I don't mix it for my cp soapl, but that cannot be the reason right? Acid in the name scares people.
Thanks for letting me ramble on..

Stearic Acid is a byproduct of animal and some vegetable fats. Rather than copy and paste the whole darn thing:) wikipedia is your friend here.
I would look at FO and preservative. Maybe try a "naked" batch, no FO and reduce preservative to .07oz. It may just be the FO that's causing the issue.

Some people are just really sensitive to FO's, or EO's for that matter.

I'm so sorry that your husband is still all red, and friends too, that just kinda sucks! Ok, that really sucks!!! But with that "menthol" feeling, I just have a gut feeling this is the FO.

Best of luck, and hope everyone is back to normal soon,

Brandy

If they are scared of stearic acid, tell them this. The human body produces its own acids. The body's natural acids control blood pressure, blood clotting, help the body's immunity and how your body responds to inflammation, injury or infection. Fish oils contain omega-3 fatty acids and internally, these are good for you. Vinegar is an acid. There is acid in citrus fruits.

Stearic acid can come from different sources. It can be made from tallow (think old fashioned candles that our ancestors used), from coconut, palm kernel, castor, rapeseed, soybeans, sunflowers or palm. It can also be made from herring and sardines.

When you make a small batch of unpreserved lotion, use it up within 2 days max. Refrigerate it. After 2 days throw it out. As always, follow all sanitizing procedures to minimize contact with any mold, germs or bacteria. That goes for your hands, counter, container(s) or any utensils you use. Use a new bottle and don't rinse it out in any way, so you don't introduce any germs or bacteria into the bottle.

Thank you for all that information. Good to know. I am dumping this bad batch of lotion and will try again with fresh bottles. No one is burning today :P

Thanks again, Carmen

I tried this again and with soapbuddy's suggestions, it turned out great. I need to invest in a jewlers scale for this size of preservative and fragrance, but my husband came to my rescue and pulled out his reloading scale, after a proper bleach down, it was perfect and accurate. LOL The lotion is very, very nice. Thanks everyone! I think my testers will like me again.
