Are containers for products clean enough, right from the manufacturer to put products in? Is there anything I should be doing before I put product in one?

Thanks for letting me ask a dumb question

Giving them a quick wash or rinse would not be a bad idea. It is not just the manufacturer your dealing with that has stored them (usually) there are a few stops along the way to you. Other warehouses and shipping facilities, etc. Sometimes in other countries as well.

If you are making lotions or creams or anything like that I would definitely always sterilize the bottles. :D

I use a sanitizer called Easy Clean. It is a no rinse product. You soak you containers for 1 minute and then drain. I usually drain on a clean dish towel. You can find it at wine making supply stores. I get it on the internet.

Thank you, I will look for Easy Clean.

I will be using bottles for lotions and body sprays, Clear PET bottles. How would I sterilize those with out ruining the bottle? I put a couple in the dishwasher on sterilzied mode, without dry and they came out warped. Would boiling do the same thing?..
I'm in the mind that 'true sterile' is very nasty chemicals that you wouldn't want in your house. Wearing personal protective equipment, special areas and equipment to clean with.. my Paramedic thinking here.

I'm sure there's a much easier way!

I just found this, http://www.eckraus.com/ONE_STEP_NO/Page_1/PS370.html
would it work?

The containers from the manufacturer should be clean. Please DON'T wash them! You will introduce germs and bacteria into your containers.

You cannot sterilize bottles or jars. At such a high temp to truly sterilize they would melt.

Sanitize all your tools and your counters with hot water with soap & bleach, then spray well with alcohol. Use disposable towels, so you're not spreading any germs or bacteria around your work surface.

I have used One Step also. It is the same as Easy Clean. I disagree that bottles and containers from the dealer are sanitary. These containers arrive to me without the lids on. I am not going to take a chance. Sanitizing them with One Step or Easy Clean and then then letting them drain on a clean dish towel is what I do and it works.

I will respond one more time and then let the subject drop. Easy Clean and One Step contain percarbonates.
"One-step releases oxygen into solution in a way that
forms hydrogen peroxide. Hydrogen peroxide kills bacteria and other
infectious organisms. Hydrogen peroxide then degrades into water
and oxygen and the only residue is a thin film of minerals that are
naturally found in most water supplies. One-step is not labeled
as a sanitizer because the producer has not chosen to apply with
the FDA for that designation. One step is mixed at one tbsp. per
gallon of warm water."

They are advertised as sanitizers. Why do we use preservatives if not to prevent bacterial and molds in our lotions and creams. I would far rather sanitize with One Step or Easy Clean than use an unsanitized container straight from a dealer.

One-Step" No-Rinse Sanitizer a label from http://www.homebrewers.com/product/6016 ... tizer.html
