I just tried a new lotion recipe. I melted the waxes down, and it looked like the stearic acid melted down as well. However, after I added the oils, butters, water and blended it up, there were bits of undissolved stearic acid in my lotion. The feel of the lotion would be nice if it weren't for all those little bitty grains. Is there anything I can do to fix this?

Did you use a stick blender to mix the oil phase and water phase? At what temp did you combine both? Did you use a thermometer? What was the recipe?
Heating your lotion to dissolve the stearic acid, could make your lotion unstable and negate the preservative. If you used a preservative, you could use it just for yourself. Or trash it and make another batch.

The recipe was pretty simple -- sunflower and jojoba oil, some shea butter, emulsifiers, distilled water, fragrance and Optiphen.

I tried re-heating the lotion to approximately 115 degrees, way below the temperature that would negate the Optiphen, blending it up a bit, and it worked beautifully. No stearic acid grains, and a nice consistency. I'm guessing that I didn't heat my oils up enough the first time.
