There's a company out there, whose products I really like -- they are effective and don't bother my irritable skin. Alas, they are pricey!! I often find them in a women's lifestyle catalog. They have the same initials as "Lunar Module".

They make a lemon poppy seed scrub I am in love with -- it helps exfoliate my middle aged, beginning-to-wrinkle, still acne prone skin. DDs 1 & 2 of teen age years like it too. One has oily acne, the other has cystic, sensitive skin, don't strip the oils acne. We ALL adore this (expensive) cleanser.

The ingredients are: Cornmeal, Lemon Rind Powder, Sodium Coco Sulfate, Poppy Seed, Jojoba Beads.

ALL of these ingredients are available online, so of course, now I'm trying to figure out how to make this myself for lots cheaper!

Essential Wholesale dot com lists the SCS as a "mild surfactant", and is the "soap" component to this item. Anyone used it? Know how it handles? Are there substitutes? Could I use a finely ground bar of super mild soap instead?

I hate buying ingredients for only *one* thing, that I won't otherwise use. (FOs don't count! )

TIA,
~HoneyLady~

When I saw your post, I was curious as to just what Sodium Coco Sulfate is, so I did some research and found it is basically an alternative to SLS or SLES. It creates lather and has cleansing properties like SLS, but it is made from coconut oil instead of petroleum as SLS is.

Here's all about sulfates, including SCS.

Some would say it's better and gentler than SLS...

...some would say it's no different, or just as bad.

You decide.

You said you don't want to buy something that you can only use for one purpose. Since it is alternative to SLS, it sounds like you could use Sodium Coco Sulfate in anything and anyway you would use SLS, so you're not limited to just your scrub recipe!

I have never used it before, myself.

HTH!

Thanks for the tips!

The product in question is a "powder" type scrub you add water to in your hand and apply to your face. I didn't make that clear. So, I'm not sure the potassium cocoate would work, as it's a liquid.

I'm thinking still about shredding a mild soap bar instead -- a'la a home made laundry detergent. The sodium coco sulfate is not that expensive, I just don't know what else to do with it, as it's a "surfactant", and I don't have any other recipes in my queue that call for such. But maybe a shampoo bar?? Hmmmm.

Thanks, ladies!
