is there a wat to test for bacterial growth at home? I took a biology course this year so I had to get a microscope(goes to 400x) so I was wondering if a way to test at home, I don't know if the bacteria would be visible on just a basic slide or not. I have no idea if anyone even knows the answer but it doesn't hurt to ask! :D

This is the only one that I know of. http://www.lotioncrafter.com/microbial- ... after.html

I want to do this, too! We also have a microscope (used it for biology course as well!), with which I want to look at a sample of a scrub I made to see if I can see anything bacteria-related. I'm assuming I need to look for movement (indicating something alive), but I don't know if it requires a stain or anything?

I bet it would work, though. I have experimented with bacterial cultures before (pond water sealed in a jar with boiled eggs, hay, or some other food source, sitting outside for a week or so; the stench was TERRIBLE when I opened it  ). I simply used a dropper to put some of the pond water near the bottom of the jar on a slide and examined under the microscope; saw plenty of little wriggling organisms, no stain required. If it works with pond water, it will probably work with lotion or a scrub. At least, I am willing to try it!

I guess biology course paid off after all...

That sounds like a good sign, Rosie!

I looked at some slides of my scrub under the microscope, and it looked OK to me! There was nothing alive at the magnification I can do with my microscope, so that is a good sign! However, mold and yeast, etc., don't move, so I don't know if there was any of that in there or not. Of course, I'm no expert, so I could have missed something important, but I did mix up a brand new scrub on the spot and observe it under the scope, too. It looked very similar to the older one. I think I am safe, considering bacteria don't grow very well in oil (correct?). But what had me worried was, I was afraid some water from the shower would get into the scrub, and then bacteria would grow in the water. And THEN, I saw a dark-looking cloud floating in the oil at the top of the scrub, and was deathly afraid it was a bacteria cloud or something. And while I could see the dark cloud under the microscope, it simply looked like a dark splotch, nothing deadly. I am now thinking it was just some vanilla extract that had separated out from the oils... Maybe I am paranoid, I just don't want to put bacteria-infested scrub all over me!

Would the lotion tester that you mentioned, soapbuddy, work for scrubs as well, or only lotion?

biggest things are ensure you are using the correct percentage AND ensure you are really mixing good for excellent dispersion. If you only half heartedly mix, you may have "un-preserved" parts. Here andthere I will leave a sample of lotion of after shave balm out in the open for a week or so to see how it reacts.
