Hello, all.

I have been buying a very expensive, imported lip balm product of which I am very fond. I won't name it for uh-oh reasons. The ingredient list is fairly straight forward and could be guesstimated -- only one item is hard to find. It uses "vanilla planifolia fruit extract", which it describes elsewhere as being the waxy coating of green vanilla pods. :!: I did not catch the vanilla in the scent -- I DID think it had some cocoa butter in it, which it does not. Interesting.

What I am curious about, is how do I "reverse engineer" this formula ? I know the ingredients are listed from most to least amounts used. But from there, that gets into ratios, and percentages, and fractionated numbers. And there is a REASON I am not an accounting major.

Any tips on working this out would be appreciated ! Is there a formula ? Like, 50% - 30% - 10% - 0.5% ... etc. ? Or just a hundred trial batches ?

Ingredients listed in order:
Jojoba Seed Oil / Beeswax / Shea Butter / Candelilla Wax / Rose Flower Wax / Caranuba Wax / Vanilla Planifolia Fruit Extract / some derivatives of EOs ...

NOTICE TO LITIGATORS AND THOSE WHO LIKE TO HIRE THEM: I AM INTERESTED IN THIS FORUMLA FOR MY OWN USE, NOT FOR DUPLICATION, INTENT TO FRAUD, OR TO INFRINGE ON THE VALUABLE FORMULAE AND PROPRIETARY INFO OF OTHER COMPANIES.

(just in case)
Thanks !

I posted a lip balm tutorial on my blog. http://gingersgardensoaps.blogspot.com/ ... d-and.html
That should get you started experimenting. You can sub any liquid oil for another liquid oil, any solid oil for another solid oil. Pure vanilla absolute is very hard to dissolve in oil. I would try infusing a liquid oil with a vanilla bean pod. Fruit extracts are normally only water soluble. I think part of the ingredients is creative advertising and listing.

Candelilla Wax is a very hard wax with a high melt point. Which leads me to believe any ingredients after the wax are used at a very small % at less then 1%.

Like Irena said, you can infuse vanilla bean pods in oil, I find that the scent & flavor of the vanilla comes through best if you do a heat infusion.

Because of the INCI requirements, whenever an "extract" is listed, it is quite possible that it is just the herb/plant/flower/spice/shrub infused into an oil(s). I have a great herbal infusion lip balm where I infuse about 6 healing herbs into my oils. The ingredient panel won't even fit onto the lip balm label because of the way the infusions, aka extracts, are written. My guess would be that this is what their "Vanilla Planifolia Fruit Extract" is.
