Teach Soap

Ok, this is likely a pretty silly question but as I am researching and trying to correctly formulate a batch of lotion I stumbled across a youtube video. SHe states she is making an 8oz recipe however all her ingred are in grams. So I converted 8oz to grams=226 and adding up the ingredients and they equal 229. Ok...simpler, here is her recipe
161g water
23g apricot oil
23g grapeseed oil
12g ewax
3g optiphen
7g fo

I will be using optiphen which is why I decided to watch this video, however I plan on swtiching the oils. Mainly I am looking for a start point with my recipe and this video made simple sense until the weights:)

It's because when you're adding it up, you're adding in the preservative. That's what I'm assuming. Or maybe she just didn't want to say she's making an 8.07774 ounce batch?

I suspect the difference is just because of rounding, if most things were rounded up you'll get a couple grams extra. Just BARELY over 8oz though, nothing to worry about.

You can always formulate in oz and then convert it to grams. I do know that 16 oz is 453.6 grams. I use an online conversion chart that you just enter in your amount and it converts it for you. I agree with the rounding up. It is easier and plus you have just a little extra instead of having to scrape the bowl to get every last drop.

Ok, so lotion making doesn't have to be as precise of soap making? I know I am going to try a batch of 16 or so ounzes...if I am going to make it I want a decent size batch. Worse case, I can't share it and have a bunch of lotion to use up before trying again:)

I measure everything in grams for lotions. It's so much easier and more accurate.

I know the voices in my head aren't real, but they sure have some great ideas!

Definitely MORE important to be super accurate, as lotion is a leave on product! Go with grams!
