Hi! I made my first whipped body butter today and I have a question. It came out greasier than I expected. I have put the ingredients I used, and was wondering if I did something wrong, or if that is normal for this type of product. I made a super small batch because I am the only one using it, and I am trying to make the most out of my first order from BB. I attempt M&P this week!

Thanks so much for your advice and help :)

I used:

1/2 cup Shea Butter
1/2 cup Mango Butter
1 TBSP Coconut Oil
3 ml Chia Latte Fragrance
1 ml Vitamin E

I heated everything up to melt it together and let it cool till it was the right consistency to whip. It smells great, feels nice going on, but is greasy. I have a little bit of Kaolin Clay I got to use in some M&P shaving bar recipe, would a little scoop if that help, or is this just par for the course for this type product?

Since I made a small batch, if I totally botched it, I have no problem tossing it and starting again.

Or, conversely, could I just mix some clay into it to "dry" it up a little bit?

ETA: I just checked on it and it has become the consistency of a mousse.

Butters and oils are greasy. You can add a small amount of cornstarch or clay, but it's the nature of the beast. :)

Body Butters are greasy by nature but there are a few different options to make them feel "dryer". I add Meadowfoam oil which is a "dryer" feeling oil than coconut. I also add tapioca starch. It helps to absorb some of the oils. Play with different butters until you find the one you like the most.

Thanks so much for the tips. I will definitely try some different butters and the tapioca! :D

I don't even melt my stuff I just whip it all together for 10 min. Much easier that way :) of course this wouldn't work if you were to use cocoa butter but i've never had a problem doing it with shea or mango. Just a thought

It is made from butter and oil; therefore, it is greasy. I do put cornstarch in mine, but make sure you blend it well.

To those who add clay, tapioca starch, etc--- wouldn't those be left behind on the skin when the oil absorbs? Also, it seems counter-intuitive to me to add something to absorb oil to a product that is supposed to moisturize?

I was going on 2 1/2 hours of sleep and I was talking about my bath melts -- the butters and oils still adhere to the skin. Baking soda helps make the water softer. Cornstarch makes them a bit less greasy to the touch, but I don't notice a difference in the bath once they're melted. Maybe it's because I put just a touch rather than a ton of it in there? In reading the post again, I now realize the subject was body butters not bath melts. Sorry.

I do add tapiocha starch to my body butters. There is no left over residue on my skin. I don't put a bunch in but it does cut down on the greasiness some. Mine takes forever to soak in. I put it on my legs and 2 hours later my legs are still a little greasy. I don't mind it so much unless my dogs or cat decide they want to rub against me and then I look like I haven't shaved in 50 years.
