Teach Soap

I made a recipe that came out great although a little greasy. I read some other posts and saw several mentioned sea clay or cornstarch being added to the recipe will help with this.

How much would I add and at one point in the process?

Also, I made an oatmeal lotion that came out WAY too watery. Can I, at this point, add stearic acid to thicken it? How would I go about doing that?

It's hard to troubleshoot unless you post the recipe. My lotion is not greasy. Are you talking about a lotion bar with no water or actual lotion? For a lotion bar, you can add a little bit of corn starch. I would not add oatmeal to a regular lotion as it's very hard to preserve. If you remelt it to add more stearic acid, you will negate the preservative. I would start over.

No lotion bars. I do not have any recipes for them. Here was the greasy recipe (off the top of my head, don't have it in front of me):

4 ounces coconut oil
.5 ounce beeswax
.5 ounce witch hazel
veg. glycerin
1/4 tsp vit e
2-4 ounces lavender infused water
15 drops lavender eo





The oatmeal recipe was:

1/2 cup finely ground oatmeal simmered for 20 minutes in 3 cups water, strained.
4 ounces coconut oil
1/4 tsp vit e
1 tsp honey
.5 ounce beeswax

This one just didn't thicken up much.

Did you happen to get those recipes from the "It's Natural Beauty Recipe Book" or something similar? Those look like the recipes I read in there a while back. (Most of them were just awful).

For your first recipe, there's not a proper emulsifier, so the glycerin & water will not mix with the oils. Also, there's not a preservative, so it will grow bacteria if it hasn't already. There's much more coconut oil in that recipe than beeswax, so it will be quite greasy.

Actually, pretty much everything I said for the first one can be applied to the 2nd one.

Genny is right, there is no emulsifier in these recipes so they will not work properly. And Irena is also correct, you do not add cornstarch or clay to a liquid lotion recipe, just to solid ones. While I haven't looked at the recipes Genny recommended, I would dump these and look for ones that include ewax, polywax, stearic acid or other such emulsifiers. Look through the Soap Queen's recipes on the teach soap recipe page or her utube videos for some (good) recipe help.

Those recipes you posted won't work without an emulsifier like e-wax. You will also need a preservative since it has water based ingredients. This includes witch hazel, hydrosol or water.
