Teach Soap

I made my first ever lotion! Really not a fancy recipe but I got my ewax and stearic acid yesterday and had to play with it. I just made 8oz of really yummy lotion using the basic guidelines on the Soap Queen Blog for a first experiment. 70% water, 6% ewax, 5%stearic, 1% preservative, 18% oils and butters. I used Shea Butter, Sweet Almond and Peach Kernel Oils. Optiphen for preservative. It's a bit thicker than I expected it to be but that's a happy surprise. Scented with BB Crisp Apple Rose. Next time I will probably adjust it a bit and play with some more fun goodies. Been reading a lot of Swiftcraftmonkey lately.

Congrats! Next time you can lower your stearic acid since you are using 6% e-wax.

Thanks Soapbuddy! This one is quite thick like a body butter texture. It's quite nice, but I think I will keep playing with it (probably a lot, as I tend to obsess ) Do you think maybe 3% stearic next time might be more fluid? With such tiny amts. it's hard to guess because of less room for error. I only made an 8oz batch because it's a first attempt but I really don't plan on making batches bigger than say 16oz. since it's just for me and my small circle of girlfriends. Not interested in selling any of the things I make.

You can try it without the stearic all together, or do 6% e-wax, 1% stearic.

Thank you. I will try it without the stearic tonight just for fun and go from there. Is there and easier way to heat and hold? I think that was the hardest part of the whole thing. I used a larger pot with water and put two beaker type vessels in the same pot one with the water and one with the oils, but I had a hard time getting them to the same temp and holding them relatively stable like that so I separated them and heated my water on the stove in a separate pot and kept my oils on a lower temp in the double boiler.

It is easier if you heat and hold your oils and water separate.

Congrats on your lotion! It's so much fun to formulate new recipes. You can also decrease your oils & butters and increase your water for a thinner lotion. Swift's blog is awesome.
