Teach Soap

In all the M&P soaps I have made so far I have just been using a tea. of FO per lb of base. I see everyone recommends using a scale to weigh it out, which I do have. Do you use the same amount of FO no matter the scent or does it depend on the scent? What is a good amount in either ozs. or grams to start with?

Not sure which FOs you are commonly using, but I know BB has a fragrance calculator where you select by the FOs and EOs they carry. I picked three FOs at random to see if the measurements changed (for 1 lb of MP), and it was the same for all three (on a scale of subtle to strong scent). It lists measurements by ounces, grams, teaspoons, tablespoons and milliliters.

Always measure in grams, it's more accurate. Usage amount depends on the fragrance you are using. NG give a maximum percentage for their FO's, BB have a calculator, and generally the supplier should at least advise a maximum or recommended amount for each FO they sell.

Yep, just like Coolah said, it's best to go by supplier recommendations since each fragrance is and supplier is different. That way you don't go too much over for any that may cause skin irritations at higher percentages.

For each of my fo's, I write on the bottle in permanant marker the suggested useage amount, that way I don't have to look it up each time I use them.

Thank you, but that led to more questions. Do I just convert the FO to grams or the base too? At the moment I have FO's from BB & NG. Now I know it's easy to look up the ones from BB (thank you Gladly) The ones from NG say a Max. %, maybe I'm a little brain dead, but how do I figure that out?

Percentage of weight of what you are making. 5% of 16 ounces, for example, etc.

This is where I love that googles search bar is also a maths question answerer ...

Say if you're making a 500g batch of soap (just as an example)

So pop into google "5% of 500g" and POP, google tells you: 5% of (500 grams) = 25 grams

Voila - use 25g of fragrance oil

You can also ask goggle 500g in ounces and it will tell you that as well It's like my high school maths teacher without the disappointed look in my direction!
