Is there a hard n fast rule about the percentage amount of Vanillan in a fragrance oil before discoloration starts? For example I know my Pink Sugar with it's 8.2% is guaranteed to discolour without a stabilizer, but what about my Banana (True) with it's 1%?

Is there a bench mark before discoloration will definitely occur? Or is it a case of anything with Vanillan will?

Anything with vanillin will discolor. The higher percentage of vanillin, the darker it will get & the faster it starts to discolor.

Bugger. I wonder where I got the idea that it was 2% and over.
I'll keep an eye on my Banana soaps I made then. I didn't add stabilizer and they need to last until the end of the month at least!!

That stinks :( I've seen the 2% thing somewhere, also. So you're not the only one that thinks that. Unfortunately, it's not true.

Are they shaped like bananas? If they turn brown, they'll just look like ripe bananas.

Yes thank you for the pictures, they are very helpful! :D

Do the vanilla-containing fragrances only discolor soap? What about foaming bath whips, whipped butters, bath bombs, bath salts, etc? I used a Vanilla Mint FO that turned my soap a lovely chocolate brown but the same FO did not discolor my soy candles. (Yes it was a skin-safe FO!)

I also read somewhere that the vanilla color stabilizer effect wears off eventually and the soaps will still discolor. I don't remember where I saw this but was wondering if anyone had that experience.
