Hi Everyone!

Quick question, Is it ok to use peppermint EO (first distillation) in my lip balm? I looked around the forum, and saw a thread saying how it was ok if your EO's were pure. Well I got my from Brambleberry (of course ) and on their website it says all of our EO's are 100% pure. BUT on the website it also only lists a few EO's with a "safe and edible" sticker. I'm confused . So is it not safe? I really like the cooling sensation it gives. Thanks for the help!

I would ask Anne-Marie. I normally get Peppermint oil from a vendor that has the GRAS certification.

What you want is FCC. Food Chemicals Codex. People lick their lips and could swallow peppermint or other eos, thus eating small amounts, so eos for lip use need to be FCC. Peppermint eo also has a bit of a bite. Wouldn't be real pleasant for chapped or abraded lips. Lip balm flavor is normally diluted with other oils and components. There are lip balm flavors that have peppermint in them, which might be your best bet. There are quite a few flavors made with natural and organic oils/ingredients.

That may be why peppermint eo isn't noted for lip use on the website. (not FCC) It doesn't say that it's safe for lips and edible within a % of use range as some others do. I remember that BB's Tea Tree Oil is safe for lip use at 1-3% but that's the only one I remember off the top of my head.

And that doesn't hold true of every vendor. WSP Tea Tree Oil, for example, is zero % for lip products. It's not for lip use, which is why I buy BB's Tea Tree.

I'll check. We just switched vendors to the same place that sells the majority of the Peppermint and Spearmint EOs for candy & gum in the Nation so I'm guessing we're purchasing a lip safe grade but give me a day to confirm with you. =)
