Hi. I just made a tube (9" long and 1 1/2" diameter ~ 10 oz) of soap to imbed in a loaf. I am using shea butter and colored it with a teal green color and used "Relaxing" BB scent. And a second tube with olive oil that I colored with a morning glory colorant. It just dawned on me that I forgot to include the vanilla stabilizer for this scent for these two logs - BB reccomends the stabilizer since there is some vanilla in it. Here is a picture of what I am making again.

Do you think I sould remelt and add the stabilizer (ugh)? Or is it likely it won't discolor since I already colored it? I will remember to add the stabilizer when I pour it into the white shea butter base. And the extra blue balls to which I've not made yet

Thoughts?
Thanks
Hilary

It depends on the % of vanilla used during the manufacturing of the fragrance. I would wait it out and see if it gets any darker. It might not.

Asliceofdelight, I'd be curious to know how the unstabilized portions of your soap are holding up a few weeks or so from now since I'm having vanilla anxieties of my own.

BTW, I love your loaf. It looks so cool! 8)

Jrose729-
I'll keep you posted. So far from the outside of the loaf it all appears okay, when I slice that's when I think I can truly tell if anything has changed. I guess it's been a week now since I made it. I'll be slicing in a few days as I'm getting ready for a local home town July 4th festival in the next town over from me (El Cerrito). My first 'official' fair (not like my kids school one that I did a month ago). I "hope" the loaf seems okay and stays that way as I am planning on selling it and then again don't want to get a bad reputation. I suppose like when I have purchased lotion at a local body/bath store and they put the vanilla /mint fragrance in the lotion they don't actually use a stabilizer and tell me it will turn brown over time (which it did) but that never bothered me because I loved the smell so much. I suppose I can just inform customers that it "may" slightly dis-color. Or tell them I'm new to this business (recently laid off which is true and garner 'some empathy' about my efforts to learn) and aski for feedback after they buy it and use it. Any thoughts on what to do with the slices if they look okay for July 4th?

And thanks Jrose729 for your compliment I'll post up another photo of the packaging as you might enjoy the little stamp/image I put on the tag to go with the soap design. I'm such a newbie and just learning what designs/colors/fragrances that I enjoy creating which can elicit a bright, warm, friendly, whimisical, happy, upbeat and/or delightful feeling (when looking at, smelling or using the soap).

I'll keep you posted

Asliceofdelight, I hope your loaf holds up okay and doesn't discolor. I understand your wanting to be confident in the product you're selling. It would make me uncomfortable, too, to have doubts about what to expect from the soap. I don't have any experience with the "Relaxing" FO myself, so I don't know what it will do or how long it will take to do it (if it's going to do anything). Listen to whatever that little voice in the back of your head says.

Your "Relaxing" loaf is very relaxing, BTW. It makes me think of a clear sky, the ocean, a quiet winter morning at the beach. I love blue and white together -- it's so soothing.

Good luck at your July 4th festival/fair! I hope it goes well for you and you sell lots of soap! :D Let us know how it goes!

Thanks Jrose729 - well I sliced it today and so far so good. The color inside on those two 'blue/green' tubes still looks as calming as it smells with no color change. The design is fairly easy so pm me if you are up for wanting to try it.

I'm feeling more confident that it will hold up mainly because the soap has already been colored and no change thus far. And that I did not forget to put the stabilizer in the white portion (and small blue balls) of the soap. Your description alone about it - matches the senses quite well. I make it with Shea Butter and Olive Oil. It really lathers great! I'm sure it's the soap base as well.

A little tip I came up with - on the top of my fragrance bottles I have put a 3/4" or 1" circular sticker (from Staples) with the name of the fragrance and a notation that it needs the vanilla stabilizer. That way I won't forget to take it out in conjunction with any fragrance that needs to go with it. This would not have happened had I remembered.

Thanks for the vote of confidence with the fair - I'm now in countdown mode :D . I'm slow to start this business but determined to really make it successful.

Hilary

I used to use those round stickers on top too til they started to come off. I write my quick notes on the label on the front of the bottles. It's also written into my soap formulas so I don't forget.

Thanks Soapbuddy. I guess my stickers havn't fallen off yet since I just started it - only a matter of time then I guess. Thanks for the tip on putting it on the label itself. Not sure why I didn't think about that as well.

Oh yeah - the soap formulas - currently on tiny post its - I tell you there was one aspect of my old corporate job as a project manager that was great - delegation  - now it's all on my shoulders (in a good way) - my kids have a sleepover for their day camp for one night - woo hoo - maybe I can actually sit down with a glass of wine and get some of those recipes that I'm fairly confident I can do in my sleep now - transfered.

Thanks

Geg yourself a nice 3 ring binder. Insert your sheet into the plastic protective sheet, so you can leave one on the counter to work with, then put it back in the 3 rint binder when yiu are done. If there were any gkitches with the soap write it in manually for next time.
