Teach Soap

I am paying much more attention to the flash points of specific fragrance oils, and just came across one with a very low flash point: 120 degrees F (Nature's Garden/Mulberry). Isn't this rather low? Considering a cold process batch could easily be 130 F or more...how is using a fragrance like this not a problem? Is this an indication this fragrance will fade rather quickly due to having such a low flash point?

Seems kinds low when most fragrances have flashpoints around 200 F.

Thoughts?

The flashpoint of a fragrance or essential oil is really only there for shipping purposes. The flashpoint is "the lowest temperature at which a liquid will give off sufficient vapor to ignite momentarily on application of a flame." Oils with a flashpoint lower than 200 degrees have to be shipped ground.

It doesn't have anything to do with the temps in your soap.

THANKS! LOL, wish I had seen this last night while making lotion batch #3.... (about face...now we are talking lotion)

I was concerned about this so was waiting for the temp to drop to 120 or so....had already added Germaben at just under 140. I'm watching this stuff get thicker and thicker. Took a bit of extra mixing to get the fragrance blended, but damn, would have been much easier at the higher temps when it was more liquid.

I am not concerned about actual combustion, maybe I was not clear - my issue was: does heating the fragrance above flash point start degrading any chemical bonds ect...so that you end up with a morphed fragrance that doesn't smell quite right, like something is "off" about it.

But I guess not! Well that will go easier the next lotion session. I am lucky I got this into the bottles (with some extra nudging).
