Teach Soap

This was my first experience with a non-Nature's Garden FO. My family lives in Eugene, OR - so I took the opportunity to stop by Glory Bee - which is primarily geared towards beekeepers, but has candle and soap making supplies. Their essential oil prices are pretty good - I wanted to pick up some 1/2 ounces to give EO's a try in small batches, and wanted to have the chance to actually SMELL scents before buying.

A friend wants a nice, "vanilla, baked goods" kind of scent, so I chose Sugar Cookie FO (picked up Lime and Lemongrass EOs as well).

So far...meh, it was great OOB - but seems to have faded a bit. Since there was no IFRA cert or any other info on the FO (HATE that, which is probably why I'll never buy like this again) I consulted the info on Nature's Garden version of Sugar Cookie, which listed the vanilla % as 7% - the highest I have ever used, and assumed I could go on that info.

Drat - I assumed wrong and it didn't darken as much as I thought - I could have done some brown tones! Yikes.

Oh well - its not a disaster, just not the nice, strong vanilla scent I thought I'd get. Hoping it changes a bit during the cure or somehow "comes back"! Well behaved - I stirred by hand and trace took a while.

IMO I find most plain Vanilla FO's really sweet and plasticky in smell. I prefer Vanilla Absolute.

I just checked out the description at Glory Bee & it says 1 oz will scent 8 lbs of soap!

I saw that 1 oz for 8 lbs too - and ignored it. I used it at 4.5%.

Sigh. This impulse to keep trying more and more fragrances works out great sometimes; other times, not so much. Oh well - onto the next thing: my first EO soap (lime).

I have read that adding clay to the soap can anchor as well. The EO is added to the clay - and it is added the soap batter last. Have you tried this?

How does lemongrass work as an achor scent for citrus? Its another one of those "smells like citrus but not from a citrus plant" kind of scents.
