I have a customer that sells DoTerra essential oils. She is sending me some to make some soaps for her for her christmas gift baskets. While I am happy about the order, I have some concerns.

the DoTerra oils are x70 concentrated. and she is sending me 5ml vials. normally I use 2-3 ounces of FO or EO's to fragrance a batch. With these oils and the super strength, I want them to come through pretty well. What size batch would you recommend for this amount of concentrated oils? OR would you dilute them to get a good result?

They are not 70X concentrated. That's just their spiel. 5 ml. size won't be enough even for a 1 lb. batch.

Here Dawn, these little guys hold almost exactly 1 lb of soap! I use them for my test batches, they make perfectly cute little bars!

LOL, I think we are thinking alike here. But I went with a silicone mold that I found at the same place. makes a small 1 inch cube...she is only looking for 12 soaps, so what I think I am going to do is make one batch and have the EO's and colorants is some cups, pour an ounce or 2 into each cup then fill the cubes...that way I can hopefully have enough to make some little gift bags or something. I think she sent me 5 fragrances and they should be here tomorrow.

are you sure the whole work is worth at all? I mean from a financial point of view, you're investing so much time, are distracted from your normal procedure, are forced to work with such a little quantity of essential oils. I hope they are not cheating you. Custom preparation is generally more expensive than a normal routine procedure.
Make sure they are not abusing you.

I kinda look at it this way, it cannot possible be worse than trying to do a six color ITP and having the fragrance accelerate trace on 5 lbs of soap and ending up with a pretty ugly soap. Kidding aside, she is going to be using my label and giving out my cards with the gifts, and heck she is paying for them. Since I am in the start up portion of the business, I can use the help in getting my name out there.

The green cube molds? Or the blue? The green ones hold about 1 oz of soap  Use some sodium lactate, and let them sit in there for a few days, even if you gel. For some reason the soap stays super soft in those molds. I use these for my sample sizes, bath fizzies, and any left over batter. Plus they are used for milk/beer ice cubes for soaping too!

it wasnt the tovolo brand, its some off brand and I doubt that it will hold even an ounce of soap but I am going to try them out with some MP first. I know she is looking for 12 bars, but I think a nice assortment of "guest" soaps might be better. I was trying to get the tovolo brand locally but no body seems to carry them in the stores and I didnt want to wait on a shipment. You would think that in the 4th largest city in America you could find just about everything, but alas you cannot.

yep thats the ones I got as well, so its good to know about letting them set. I also got a heating pad to help with gelling. I almost never use the silicone for CP because of its always so hard to get the soaps out of them. I'm also planning to use sodium lactate to help harden them up.
