Few topics in soap making and candle making have engendered so much discussion, debate and controversy as fragrance oils vs. essential oils in candle and soap making.

But let’s start with the basics:

What is a fragrance oil?
A fragrance oil is a mix of various chemical components, some natural (from plants or even animals), and some synthetic. They are carefully formulated and/or blended to the exact specifications of a perfumer whose goal is to design a scent. “The perfumer is effectively an artist who is trained in depth on the concepts of fragrance aesthetics and who is capable of conveying abstract concepts and moods with their fragrance compositions.â€

Fragrance oils are blends of synthetic aroma chemicals, solvents, and I'm not sure what all else. They may or may not include natural aroma chemicals. Not all fragrance oils are made the exact same way, so some may or may not contain some of the more common ingredients, such as solvents.

Essential oils come from plants, and are considered natural. The main techniques used are cold pressing, hydrodistillation, extraction with organic solvents, and extraction with compressed CO2.

Which you use is entirely up to you, your budget, and your viewpoint about natural.

hello all,
Yes, as some say here; one may be very synthetic or not, and the other is touted to be plant essences. But again it still depends on the distillation process, does it not? That information is not regulated and disclosure on the label is not mandatory information.

At least as far as I know, companies do not need to state how they are extracting the plant essences which they use in the end product. This site talks a bit on the subject----, they say "unadulterated plant oils".
