I made a vanilla scented soap for the second time; each time, used a different brand of vanilla fragrance. Both times, the saponification process really seemed to knock the strength out of the scent. The first time, I just figured it might have been the brand. This time, I used Brambleberry's Vanilla Select. Wonderful OOB, used at maximum 5%. Same thing...three days later (not yet out of the mold) its really quite reduced in strength and just doesn't have the same punch as it does OOB. Its different somehow.

So are vanillas just like that? Is that why vanilla absolute exists?

For me, I find most vanilla fragrances either fade or morph or change into a scent of a kid's playdough scent. Vanilla absolute is the only one that doesn't, but it's pricey.

Got it; thanks so much. Kids play dough is pretty accurate.

Oh well, have some left for some lotion. I've been on a quest to make a really nice vanilla lotion for a friend; I guess she'll have to be happy with the superior scent of the lotion.

Give it a week or two. I've noticed that it's pretty common about BB's scents in particular for the scent to fade or morph sharply at day 2 or 3, then rebound.

To my nose, the OMH Cybilla strongly had that play-do note at 3 days, but it faded to (almost) nothing and the OMH scent came back. I still get some play-do scent, but not everyone does.

I am so glad I decided to read through all of these posts tonight because I was going to make a vanilla soap tomorrow. Guess not now  I was planning to make a two part soap with half the soap chi latte and the other half vanilla. Any suggestions on what to use instead? What are vanilla EO good for if not soap making?
Thank you

My vanilla soap does change a bit, but it still sells well, so.... I have never avoided making it. I use a LOT of TD in part of the batter (small swirl), which prevents it from turning to the very dark brown that the rest of it does.

I've been using the vanilla scent in question in lotion and boy the difference is really something - much purer and yummy.

However, The Boyfriend insists he still likes the disaster of a soap this batch turned out to be (I call it "Mr. Hanky Poo Soap") and insists he likes the vanilla smell. The person I had intended to make this for loved it as well so go figure. Maybe its because we made the soap and know so well how the smell has changed, we just can't abide by it but others can.
