Teach Soap

I have always made spearmint EO soap, and it sells very very well. But last year, like a lot of people, I ran into the discoloring spearmint EO, even though I purchased from several different suppliers. Some discolored more than others, but all of them did a little bit.

NDA has a great sale on a couple of different peppermint EOs, so I considering making a change.

I would truly love to hear from anyone who has sold both - which one do you or your customers prefer and why?
And I need to dig up that IFRA stuff on peppermint - don't want to sting anyone's parts!

What was it about discoloring spearmint EO last year? Why was it discoloring?

Since you found a good sale on peppermint EO, I say go for it, make some peppermint soap and see how well it sells compared to your spearmint.

I used spearmint and eucalyptus in the fall to make a soap and it didn't discolor at all. I think it was the NOW brand. I would say it sold pretty well, I have one bar left that I put away for myself. I made a couple peppermint round soaps but never sold them because I got a little overzealous with the blue color and it made blue bubbles, so I'm not sure if people would have liked the scent more or less.

I feel like peppermint is more of a winter/Christmas scent, but I love spearmint year round. That's just me though.

Peppermint and peppermint blends seem to sell better for me than spearmint. So many people smell the spearmint and won't buy it because it smells to much like gum to them.

It's strange, but people always pick up my soap and say "ooo, I love peppermint" Then I tell them that it is actually spearmint.
Others comment that it smells like gum or toothpaste, but peppermint gum and toothpaste are just as common as spearmint, so not sure if I'll keep hearing that one or not.

My peppermint EO is scheduled to arrive Monday. Still mulling over the potential design in my head. Maybe I'll make it the exact same as my spearmint and see if anyone notices a difference!

My best seller (other than BRV, cough) is a spearmint/bergamot blend coconut milk soap. I don't have any peppermint EO soaps that I bring to market with me right now though, except blended in my dog soaps.

I've never had my spearmint EO (WSP) discolor, but I did have a spearmint FO from NG discolor to yellow a couple years ago.

I blend BB's Sweet Meyer Lemon FO with their Spearmint EO and it sells well. So far no problem with the spearmint discoloring. I don't do a straight peppermint soap, but the blends do well.

Laura, the spearmint/bergamot sounds nice! I'm going to try it now that I have a big bottle of bergamot.
