Teach Soap

Anyone ever sold wholesale to local gift shops? I've had an inquiry from a local gift shop and I have a meeting scheduled this weekend. Any advice?

Do you have wholesale policies, prices and terms in place? What is your minimum? Will they require displays? Samples? What other types of items do they sell? Will it be a good fit for you? Do you have enough stock in place that's fully cured and ready to go?

Also, do you have proof of liability insurance? Some retailers will ask about this before they take your products.

Figure out your costs for any supplies (including shipping to you), time and labor. Then divide that into each bar you make to see how much each bar costs you. You should be able to double that for wholesale.

Retail price is dependent on many factors. One of them is what can your local market bear? Take a look at your local area and see if there are any soapers nearby. Go to your local craft fairs and shows and see how much a bar of handmade soaps costs. I'm talkiing about real businesses, not the ones that do it as a hobby and only charge enough so they can buy more supplies and don't account for all their costs.

Search online for people that sell soap in your area or in your state. Don't market your soaps so low that in case your supply costs go up, you would have to charge more. Always give yourself a margin of room.
