Teach Soap

Is there any way we could get a live feed chat room added to the site? Some of us would find that really helpful!

The problem with live chat is moderation. When affiliated with a website, especially one owned by such a large business, what is said has to be moderated to a degree, which would mean having someone around full time to monitor what is going on. On top of that there is the bandwidth usage, security issues, etc. (Not speaking on behalf of BB obviously, but have run forums for over 10 years now and live chat was always an issue)

What about Skype? You can only have 4 to a group chat, but given how everyone is located all over I'm not sure everyone would be awake at the same time anyway heh. Or even Twitter - although a public channel, it would allow for near instant chatting. Alternatively there are hosted chat rooms out there, no reason why the forum users here couldn't make one off-site to use.

I'm no computer whiz, but I've seen other sites that have live chat using moderator bots. The reason to moderate a chat would essentially to keep out unwanted spamming and to prevent any kind of abusive language I assume. Sites such as Ustream which have a chat channel for each video stream use bots that look for certain things. If words are repeated it's considered spamming. If too many posts are sent in a row, or if the same post shows up too many times in a row. If foul language is used it also sets off the mod bots. Any of these things kick a user out of the channel. They do occasionally kick people innocent of either spamming or in any way being up to no good but for the most part it works. I got kicked once for saying I "really really really" liked something. It was too many really's. Usually a moderator can remove a ban or let someone back in the channel at their discretion but I don't know how much of a headache that would be.

It's a lot of work and the mods here are volunteers. I don't care for the idea.
