Fresh out of the box my 12 bar mold from BB smells so bad i actually gagged. I washed it out with soapy water, wiped them out and poured my soap in. Ruined the soap by making it smell the same. I'm now trying a solution of vinegar but I read that you have to soak them overnight. Did I just get a bad mold? I've heard of the baking method but I know my Dad will just get upset if I do that.

If you're talking about a wooden mold, I would not soak it. It will swell the wood or warp the sides. Let it air out in the garage or outside for a while.

As it is unfinished wood, soaking it will only warp and damage the wood, like Irena said. I always let something new like this, be it a mattress, mold, anything that has an odor, gets a good afternoon or two sitting on the deck in the sun to air it out and it should be taken care of. If the sun can leech out diaper stains from cloth diapers, it sure can take care of a scent on something else.

I looked up all the molds that Bramble Berry carries that have 12 cavities and I'm wondering if you got a silicone (plastic) mold? If you let me know which one, I'll go check our stock to see what's going on with it. That said, if it is a silicone mold, soaking in baking soda + water helps to deodorize of course and the molds are safe to bake up to 350 but try the soaking method first and keep me posted =)

Sorry for the delay my computer stopped working and I'm trying to do this on an iPod. It is the blue silicone mold that makes 12 bars. I first rubbed vinegar onto it all and added baking soda and let soak over night. People said my soaps smelled like rubber so I then did baking soda again the next day and soaked again which seemed to work. Now I just have the new scent I used stuck in it so I guess i'll do baking soda again?

SoapMonkey, I bought several of those from BB, and they didn't smell at all! It really sounds like an anomaly. The only time anything from BB came stinky was when a fragrance oil sample opened up in transit.:)

If scent sticks in mine after I've made a soap (cedar wood essential oils can be really sticky, for instance), I soak it in a sink of water with some vinegar, and that does the trick.

Yup, I have that mold too and it didn't smell. Sometimes my fragrances will stick to the mold, but they don't carry over from one batch to the next.

Hi Soap Monkey,

I just ran out to the warehouse and smelled what we have in stock. They smell like silicone to me but I can see how someone might be sensitive to that scent. I would definitely suggest washing the mold the first time you use it (which is what I normally do with now molds anyway to make sure they are perfectly clean).

We use this mold all the time to test new fragrances. It's a great mold. Between soaps I usually soak in in hot water with a grease fighting soap like Dawn. Once it air dries it smells neutral again. I hope these tips can work for you but please let me know if you have any questions! We're here to help!

I ordered another one and it just had a very light silicone scent, not bothersome at all. I don't know why the first one smelled so bad so I"ll just chalk it up so a fluke. I'm glad I ordered another one and got to see what they are actually supposed to smell like. Thanks for all the help!
