There is a type of Pretzle that does have lye - also Lutefisk - a Sweadish Fish dish that my folks used to endure at Holidays in Minnesota! ( Yuck!) They soak the fish in lye for a few days and then rinse it clean a couple of times and then add butter or something to it. Sorta like a whale-blubber consistency. I can't fathom why anyone eats it though lots of people do.

Olives are also soaked in lye to cure them - the lye is rinsed out later, before you eat them. (Olives are hard as rocks when picked from the tree.)
