I made some playdough for my son on Nov. 28th. I was testing this out since I plan to make some for the other little children I know. As far as putting it in an air tight container. it barely lasted 2 weeks. I checked yesterday and, there was mold.

I was going to make another batch and see how long it last refridgerated but christmas is coming close and, I have to mail a few of these out.

What preservative would you guys recommend? and, the usage rate. Since I work mostly with Melt-n-pour, I have no reason to look into this
I've looked at Germaben, Phenonip and, Optiphen. Phenonip sounds best because this recipe is cooked.

The recipe is as follows.
8 cups flour- I used the All-purpose kind
8 cups warm water
4 cup salt- the regular table kind
1 cup vegetable oil
1/4 cup Cream of Tartar

thanks for the help.

I would go with Germaben at 1%. The only way to know if it works is to try it and leave it out for at least a couple of weeks. I would not mail any out. Leaving it in the fridge slows the growth of germs, mold and bacteria, but they can still grow in a cold environment. I wouldn't risk it.

Not sure on the mold - I have not had that with homemade playdoh before. Just wanted to say that a couple weeks is usually how long my home made playdoh lasts as well. :D

I agree with not mailing out until you are confident of the recipe, especially with kids tendencies to eat/lick playdoh.
