So my new years resolution was to stop wasting things so often. In my opinion, people waste SO much without even realizing it. Im guilty myself. So, I know this isnt a huge step but it's better than nothing. Ive been making my own Bird Suet from rendered beef scraps. It so easy and my daugher Madalyn loves all the beautiful birds its attracted!I put a few chunks on various trees. Ive had 16 blue jays, 6 gold finches, a set male & female cardinals, and TONS of woodpeckers. Nothing is wasted from your tallow :P and this so important during the cold winter months even survival for some birdies. In the summer its not vital but it sure is nice to look at a variety of birds. Just make sure if you buy an actual suet cage that you wash it every few days. Good Luck!
Heres how:
1. Render beef fat as usual (for tallow to use in your soap of course!)
2. Collect all the chunks and lay them (still warm) in a cake pan or rectangular tupperware dish
3. Mix in about 1 heaping TBSP of peanut butter just enough to smell it not see it too much
4. 1 1/2 cups sunflower hearts mixture bird seed (really any is ok this is what i always have a 50 lb bag of on hand)
5. Molasses not much approx 1 tsp
6. 1/2 tsp salt
7. 1/2 cup oats (not instant)
8. You can add stale cereal broken up, shelled peanuts, bread crumbles, raisins, currants, prunes, cranberries, apples pretty much ANYTHING
9. Mix this up really well and put saran wrap over pan and smush down with hands so its flat
10. Pop in the fridge until hardened and cut into square chunks
11. cut a square from an onion bag or something mesh and create a pouch to hang your suet
You can adjust ingredients accordingly this is about what Id use for about 1 lbs of cracklins. Feel free to add other goodies.

Thanks!!! I'm going to try it. I'm too disgusted with the waste I produce and always looking for ways to reduce, reuse and recyle.

It feels so good knowing that every part of the cow is utilized. Im glad youre gonna try it margo! I wasnt sure if anyone would be interested or not! Soapers/crafters usually seem pretty thrifty so i thought maybe someone would give it a shot. I mean lots of us render tallow for soap, and toss out the leftover pieces. Good luck! Like i said in my earlier post dont feel like you have to measure the stuff out. I just put that as a very flexible guideline. I do find that too much bird seed will make it fall apart a little easier. Oh and I asked my Dad about putting alum in the suet. He said it should be used very sparingly & its just to keep it a little harder.
