Teach Soap

Two big shows in two weeks- I'm done in. Over all it went really well. OK so I'm still not happy about the egg but I'm moving on.

At the craft show they really seemed to like our soaps. It was almost all single item purchases though. Attendance was 4000 for one day and it was all in one building.

The Green folks may win though as our people. Attendance at the show was supposed to have been 13,000 the first day but I know we had less than 4000 come through our building. That was irritating- as was the wicker egg that was more irritating as it could have been shifted out over and my 'flow' issue fixed. The green Folks were still purchasing a lot of gifts, but there were more multi soap purchases.

People were still talking at the Green Show about how we had been on the news for the craft show.

Oh and we are starting to over come the 'too pretty to use' objection. People say it and we say 'oh didn't your mom let you use the pretty soap?' which of course is always no- then I laugh and say 'isn't it good to be the grown up?' I've used this about 10 times and got two purchases I wouldn't have otherwise and regardless everyone laughs.

The other thing that really surprises me is how young some of our shoppers are. Some little girls are very serious about pretty soap at a young age. One of them bought a bar for $5.50 all in quarters that she dug out of her little purse. A different girl was studying our soap very intently. She was about 9. Anyway, we told her that the charcoal soap was good for washing off boy germs and she pursed her lips and said 'that might be a big help'. Overall there was a lot more kiddos begging for soap than we would have thought and I sold out on my robots and fish.

I really don't think unscented is getting in my way. Some folks prefer it, but many folks prefer the unscented. A number I suppose could go either way.

Amazing to hear that about the 'little' girls... and good for them! I also dislike the - too pretty to use - comments that I get from family and friends. I just tell them that if when I come to there house I see a soap sittting on a shelf looking pretty and not allowed to be used they will get no more from me! My dtr thought it was only good as hand soap until I put a bar in the shower for them at one of there visits. She said " it never dawned on me to use this as a body soap?" And we paid for collage??

I like your response to the "too pretty to use" debate. For a soaper, it's nice to hear your soap is pretty, but not nice to hear it won't be used.

I've noticed a lot of younger girls buying soap at craft shows, also. I had this one girl who was with her mother at a craft fair not too long ago. She was debating on getting soap or lip balm with money she'd earned herself and she was so torn, but bought the soap, so I gave her a complimentary lip balm. She was so happy, plus then her mom ended up buying a few things, too.

I just felt so humbled that the little girl had saved all her money and out of all the places she could have chose to shop from, she chose my soaps.

I know the voices in my head aren't real, but they sure have some great ideas!

I had my first crack at selling soap last Saturday. I knew I needed to set a start date and show up somewhere or I might never actually set everything up. I started at a flea market in my little town. I only sold four bars of soap, but two of them were to the same little boy. I figured his mother was thinking, "If this will get little Johnny to take a bath, I'll spend an extra dollar or two on soap". :D I wonder if it worked.
