Teach Soap

Hi all,

I'm an Australian soaper and candle maker and I'm finally getting to the point where I'm almost ready to try selling my candles. Not quite there with the soaps but I plan to in the near future. I'm wondering if anyone can give me some advise on things I need to consider before I do so eg. insurance in Australia. I tried to do a little research and mostly just got confused. Can anyone give me some advice on where I could get insurance and if possible a general idea of how much it's going to cost me. I've figured out that I need to list ingredients on packaging for soap and that I can't make any claims like "cures this" etc. Are there any other things I need to think about?

But I know there are several Aussie soapers on SMF - who can probably give you some answers.

hey silverpegasus, i'm in the same boat over here! have you found any insurance yet? i'm going to be looking around hopefully this week for some insurance before i start doing some markets.

Hi Goddessbec. Sorry I took so long to reply to your question. I had a bit of a look into it but I only looked at people's websites. I never actually got around to asking anyone for a quote because I'm not ready for it just yet.

One thing I did figure out in my research is if you're making CP soap you'll need to register with NICNAS as well. If you're only making MP like me then you don''t (It has to do with using the chemicals eg Lye)

I think I'll need insurance in a couple of months time in order to do markets, but I'm still just experimenting at the moment and don't want to pay for insurance I'm not using.
