Hi, everyone!

I am thinking about participating in some craft fairs later this year and I am wondering about the use of a UV inhibitor. I haven't zeroed in on any particular fairs yet, but some are indoors, some are outdoors. Obviously, if the fair is indoors, I won't have to worry about a UV inhibitor. But if it is outdoors, I have concerns about fading. I know many of you on the forum have experience with craft fairs, so I thought I'd run this by you all.

If I know a craft fair will be outdoors, I can make some soap specifically for the fair using UV inhibitor (I make M&P soap, if that matters). But, if I have inventory sitting around that I'd like to sell that doesn't have UV inhibitor in it, what should I do? I don't want to have a bunch of soap sitting around, and then make more with UV inhibitor and then risk having it sitting around, too, if it doesn't sell. I'd like to keep my soap as fresh as possible and avoid having too much just hanging out.

The other option is to just put UV inhibitor in everything so I don't have to worry or keep up with what has UV inhibitor in it and what doesn't. But this would be an additional expense and an extra step.

What if I use an awning or canopy when I'm outdoors to shade my table? Would that protect the soap enough from UV rays that I wouldn't need an inhibitor? Do I need to worry only about soap left exposed to direct sunlight? What do you guys do about this at outdoor craft fairs?

Thanks for any input or advice. I am just trying to anticipate and plan to avoid an unfortunate experience for myself or a customer. :)

Even with an UV inhibitor soaps in bright sunlight will fade. I suggest you use a tent, an awning of some sort or a large umbrella to shade your products.

Thanks for the response, soapbuddy. Sounds like UV inhibitor isn't terribly necessary so long as I shade my soaps adequately, if I understand correctly. I appreciate the advice! :D

You're welcome. Most colors will fade in strong sunlight over time.
