Hello everyone, I've been CP & HP soaping for a bit. This spring I've decided to challenge myself by going completely old school and create some bars from scratch. I've collected my rainwater and ashes. I'm a little confused about how my potash water is going to work. after I strain the water through the ashes/straw several times I can reduce the water ratio on the stove. A hydrometer can tell me the lye water's density but how will that help me calibrate my ph. I'm going on the assumption that if, for example, my recipe requires 12oz of water and 4.04 ounces of sodium hydroxide I can create 12 ounces of potash water with a PH of 14 and use it in the same HP recipe. If anyone has any thoughts, suggestions, and/resource recommenations I would approach your thoughts. Thanks!

You would need a pH meter to calculate the correct pH. Lye from ashes creates potassium hydroxide which makes a soft soap.
