You specifically aimed your question at hobbyists, if I read it correctly. When I was only a hobbyist (lo many years ago - lol), then no I did not spend the money or time to trademark. Now that I am a business, YES, I have trademarked some of my things - names for a new line of soaps, etc. It was quite easy to do online, and only costs $275. I have only had one issue, so far, where an examiner did not agree with me, and we are working on that. not fun. If you are going to trademark, I recommend a hugely thorough search, way more than their little auto one on the USPTO website, before spending the money.
As a hobbyist, I guess a lot would depend on exactly how attached you are to a particular name or design. If you aren't selling ,then who is going to see you using ( and therefore potentially object) any name or logo anyway?
