I'm interested in finding out how many have insurance for their soaping business.

It is a wise precaution if you are selling your soaps.

I learn so much when I can't leave well enough alone!

I do not but then I do not sell my soaps. They are given to family and some close friends and stick to this. At least twice a month I will get someone asking me if they can buy a bar of soap. Usually I just tell them I do not have a license to sell, and since I work in corrections I can not ignore the law! If I was to sell I would look at getting it. I have spoken with a few soap makers at the farmers market and I think most of them do not as they either give me a strange look or make up an excuse. Maybe they think I am looking for someone with insurance to sue???

I have wondered about insurance. I do not sell my soap and have no plans to ever sell it. I just started to make soap 3 months ago. I have made 10 batches since then and it is starting to stack up. I am sharing with family and friends and have a long list for Christmas giving. But it is a long time between Christmases and birthdays. I am thinking about donating some to our Thanksgiving food drive. Also there is a craft room at our Fall Festival that sells donated items. We also have a committee that helps out the needy all year long that I could donate to. Is it safe for me to make these donations without insurance?

Without insurance I would only give to family and VERY close friends! Not worth being sued and losing your house! And yes, even family and friends sue people, have a friend who lost her house when her son sued her! A couple hundred dollars a year is worth the security of keeping your house and possessions IMHO!

Once I thought about this I stopped doing the donation thing... what a shame that we have to be so careful. As for family... I wonder what happened there, how tragic that family could not work it out or that a product was that bad ?? I have one daughter and well, if she sues me - she will eventually get all I have anyway, and I WILL come back to haunt her! Actually if something I made hurt her or one of the grandchildren I would give all I have to make it better! I love them to pieces!

This is an interesting topic that I've been quietly stalking. It's the only thing my boyfriend isn't an expert on! But it seems the general rule of thumb is insurance insurance insurance! As much as we trust the people that buy our product we can't be too careful. Some people have no shame in filing ridiculous lawsuits. It reminds me of the Weird Al song I'll Sue Ya!

I absolutely have insurance. There is no way I would sell my products if I didn't carry insurance.

I know the voices in my head aren't real, but they sure have some great ideas!

I'm not officially selling yet but when I do I'm definitely going to make sure I'm covered with insurance! I'm not the gambling type especially since I'm partnered with my boyfriend! If you have anyone besides yourself involved you shouldn't gamble for them.

But a tiny side question what's the best insurance for a new business? It's not like I'm going to be making millions so I'd just need starting up insurance.

O.K. You all have convinced me not to donate my soap but now I am wondering. I make pies for the fall festival, cookies for our annual bake sale and casseroles for funeral luncheons. Am I just as vulnerable when making these donations? After all people actually eat these things.
