Teach Soap

Hi all,

I’m just curious to what the majority of people use to keep track of known good formulas (recipes/BOMs). Are you using a digital format like Excel or an inventory/manufacturing program or just basic index card system?

I'm a computer geek by trade and I mostly use Excel right now for figuring out conversions and formulations... but I can see if I get serious with this that I'll probably either create manufacturing database or look for one that is readily available.

SoapMaker is a great software program for soaping (and non-soap products too) that contains its own lye calculator. There is a less expensive lite version and a professional version. Love it!

I love SM3 - When I bought it, I went ahead and bought the Pro version. That being said, you can install this on up to two computers.

However, I also keep most of my formulas on a spreadsheet on Google Drive, so I can access it from anywhere, even my phone, if I need to check to see what % I used of X item.

You never know when your power company is going to throw you for a loop and fry every electronic you own. Stupid TVA >.< Been through 5 TVs in the last 18 years because of them and their random 2 second "the sun is shining, no clouds in the sky" power flips.

I use Soapmaker3 as well...LOVE IT

Thanks all, I bought the pro version of it today. Very simple to use.

I have SM3, but I actually don't like it. At all. I find the programming in it to be so clunky and ineffective, especially for the price. Wish I could un-buy it!

A iPad version would be sweet.

I'm old fashioned and I print out my recipes from soapcalc and then I put them in my notebook. I have a few recipes stored on my mac but I like to just pull out my notebook and flip to what I need. I hand write all my notes on there as well. I guess my visual learning style has something to do with it. I can't hear something and store it in my brain. I have to see it and feel it to know it and I can't pick up the computer and hold it in my hand and go over it several times. It's just a weird thing I guess but that's how I am and how I do it.
