My old one which I loved and decided to break right before christmas with my inlaws.. grrrrr so I'm in the market for a new digital camera but there's so many of them out there that I cant decide which one to buy. and what the difference between "SLR" and regualr digital camera besides price? anyone chime in please... I'm only using the camera for soap pictures and other non-professional events. I'm budgetting for 200 and under price tag. thank you and will keep an eye on this thread.

SLR means single lens reflex and is what most full sized cameras were before digital came out. Now we have DSLR but they are still typically bigger cameras with removeable lenses.

I would think in your budget you can get a pretty nice point and shoot digital. What was the model of the one that broke?

I had that came since ;last christmas I believe... cant be quite sure though... was alot going on during the time I brought it. but I dont want to get another easy share kind.

Kodak typically has a good reputation, though I've never owned one (except for maybe an Instamatic when I was a little kid). You may want to check the warranty on that before the trash goes out!

I've had a Canon Powershot SD950 for almost 5 years now. I have taken over 9000 pix with it. The zoom button sticks a hair but that was because I was out in a snowstorm with it. The price when bought was more than you want to spend, but there are models out now that are similar but less costly.

The first digital camera I bought was an HP back in 2001. It was for my then-husband. We both used it for a few years till he had to upgrade. Around 2007 or so, I gave it to a friend who used it till he got a new phone with a better camera. He gave it back to me a couple of years ago and if the batteries hadn't corroded in it, I bet it would still be working.

You may want to check out this site: http://www.dpreview.com/ They have reviews and the next menu over has comparison charts.

I would recommend dpreview.com also. I love that website. Are you attached to any particular brand?
I prefer Canon and currently have 5 different cameras by them. My little point and shoot is amazing. It is the Canon PowerShot ELPH 100HS. It is just a point and shoot camera but is has all the cool scene modes and I can even shoot in full manual which I like.
Canon has many different series of P&S cameras. The high-end line are the SX/S/G cameras. They have similar technology and functions as the DLSR cameras but with the easyness of a smaller camera. The next line is the ELPH. Cheaper than the other ones. It is a point and shoot, has many many modes, great high definition video, works perfectly! Canon's cheapest line of P&S is the A series. I've never used one of these but from what I have seen they work great and do the basic things a camera is suppose to do while putting out the quality you need.
DSLR's start around $400(with a lens) and that is a bit out of your price range. I would suggest going to a camera section of a store and handling cameras to get the feel of them in your hands before buying. You can usually always get them cheaper online but it is nice to have an idea before it shows up to your house.
I'm not sure if I helped at all but I tried. :-)

I'm shying away from kodac but canon seems like the better brand. as for see them in person. the nearest store other them walmart is an hour away. so online is my best bet I think. as we have a ton of snow now so its even harder to get there to the city. but I will take a closer look at canons. my aunt who was a photgraphic sworen by canon. but I thank you all.

My mom is a photographer and one of the point and shoots that she picked up from Walmart was an Olympus for 178.00. It was an awesome camera, till she dropped it while it was on (she broke her cardinal rule here re: wrist straps) and dented it so it wont close, so now we have to get it repaired. I picked up a Nikon Coolpix for 99. at Target and it too is a great little camera for the price.

I've got a cannon point and shoot camera. Love it! nothing fancy to it. You can also do video as well. Got it for about 129. I know you can get it at Target for that price sometimes.

Melissa, I, too, use a point and shoot Canon (has more features than I ever need but was a gift from my brother). Once he told me which camera he wanted me to have, I actually found a used one on eBay in perfect condition.

I love this site for researching electronics. My brother is a semi-professional photographer and only buys from them (they are local to us):

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/

They are running a huge sale until January 5th. Easy to do a sort by brand and price on digital cameras. They are not always cheapest on price, but often are, and have largest selection in one place for researching features, brands, etc.

Don't know if you use Google Shopping - once I find an item I want, I use Google Shopping (different from organic Google search) since you get big bold pricing information, including tax and shipping to figure out who's got the best price.

The problem with Google shopping is that it's a paid program. If you don't pay, you will never be seen in the results.

JR and BH are great but don't forget Amazon.

What's the comparison site that's been around for years? Priceshopper? Maybe a google of "best price on blah camera" will find it

Edit: it's pricegrabber
